What is a notarized translation?
O A notarized translation is a translation performed by a Certified Translator and afterwards authenticated by a Notary Public. Thus, the translated and notarized translation can be used in front of Romanian or international Authorities.
A notarized translation is a translation that includes both a Translator's certification and a Notary’s authentication.
The translation is certified by a Notary Public. By authenticating the translation, the Notary Public authenticates the signature of the Certified Translator. In fact, the Notary certifies that the translation in question has been made by a Certified Translator.
The notarized translation will contain two signatures: that of the Certified Translator and that of the Notary Public. The Certified Translator will certify the translation and the Notary will authenticate the Translator's signature.
When do we need a notarized translation?
There are many cases where a notarized translation is required. Usually, a notarized translation is needed when we have documents that need to be submitted to various local or foreign institutions or authorities.
Notarized translations are usually required for:
- vital records documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce documents, death certificates);
- Diplomas, School Transcripts and school certificates;
- Legal and commercial documents (contracts, Court decisions, Power of Attorney);
- Bank and financial documents;
- Other official documents.
For example, in the case of a foreigner who wants to live and work in Romania, the Immigration Office will ask for a criminal record issued by the authorities of the foreigner's country of origin. Obviously, the record will be issued in a foreign language. Many countries issue criminal records in English on request (e.g. China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kosovo, India etc.). This criminal record must be translated and submitted as a notarized translation. The Certified English Translator will translate the certificate, certify (with stamp and signature) the accuracy of the translation and then the Notary Public will authenticate the Translator's signature.
What is the fee for notarizing a translation?
The translation notarization fee is a fee charged by the Notary Public for authenticating the translated document. This fee varies from Notary to Notary, but most often it is 50 Lei + VAT for one copy. In the case of translations from/into English made by me which need to be notarized, the only fee that you will have to pay is the Notary's fee (there are translation offices where, in addition to the Notary's fee, clients are also charged for taking the documents to the Notary, printing the documents etc.).
